The Stevie Ray Vaughan Experience
Ken
November 2, 2001

I was lucky enough to more-or-less grow up with the music of Stevie Ray. Stevie's first album "Texas Flood" came out when I was a junior in high school, and I was immediately hooked. I was also lucky enough to see Stevie in concert more than 10 times, and each show was a true celebration. As a guitar player myself, a Stevie show was almost a religious experience for me, always inspiring and mesmerizing. My friends and I would wait all year for Stevie's annual pilgrimage through our area. From seeing him in a small club with less than 100 people to his last tour with Jeff Beck in an area packed with thousands, each show was an experience all its own.

I still remember where I was and what I was doing when I heard about Stevie's death on the radio. I was just absolutely floored. Thank God he left such a beautiful legacy of music for us to enjoy. Though I never stopped listening to Stevie's music, its significance took on a new meaning for me when I lost my wife of 12 years to cancer this April. That's when I rediscovered my guitar, and rediscovered how Stevie's music (and the blues in general) have the ability to carry us over our greatest hardships. When its finally my turn to meet my maker I plan on doing two things: kiss my wife and jam with Stevie. That's how I will know I'm in Heaven.
