The Stevie Ray Vaughan Experience
The first time I ever heard anything about my hero was when I was taken to a concert of his on my 22nd birthday on July 22, 1990. He was playing a double bill with Joe Cocker that evening and opened the show. At that time I was playing in a rock band and listening to guys like Eric Johnson ( a fellow Texan and friend of Stevie's) and Eddie Van Halen. What I saw changed my life that night. I immediately became absorbed in the blues, bought myself a Strat and started listening to the influences that helped shaped this man's playing. Just a little more than a month later I learned that the man that had changed my playing and my life so much had left us forever. You know, at that time I had never lost anyone close to me and had never grieved a passing before but there I was, crying my eyes out for the loss of someone I had barely gotten to know let alone appreciate. I have since read and re-read every bit of literature about SRV that I could get my hands on and have learned one very important thing about him: many people that never knew him feel the same way about him that I do and that to me speaks volumes about the character of someone who can touch so many so deeply without ever having to speak a word to them. God bless this world for giving me and every other fan out there the precious gift of his music. It brings tears to my eyes and joy to my soul every time I endulge in his playing. R.I.P. buddy, we love you.
