The Stevie Ray Vaughan Experience
I fell in love with Stevie's sound at about the same time that he was gaining international fame. I was never a big fan of the musicans who inspired Stevie to play the way he did so I never heard their sound in his playing, with the one exception of Hendrix. I saw him play live three times in Minnesota. The last time was two weeks before the crash that ended his sound. A few years later I started hanging around the blues bars in the twin cities and I expected to hear some great blues playing, and I did. However there was something missing and it took me a while to pin it down. When you listen to the Blues live pay attention to the way guitar and harmonica players jam. Especially at the turn around at the end of the 12th bar. Did you ever notice the way they will often stop and think about what they are going to do next? And often the next lick will be something too much like the lick they left off on. I was accostomed to Stevie's playing and was expecting to hear more like it. I should have known better. Stevie's playing flowed flawlessly from one bar to the next without the slightest pause to think about what was coming next. He did this live as well as he did in the studio. I have heard no other musican ever do this. I'm sure there are others but nobody with that golden edge like Stevie Ray Vaughn. I loved him...........I really don't know what else to say.
