The Civil Engineer

This clever variant on a very old theme was sent to us by Phil Shaw.

An ambitious civil engineer named Ian was hired to construct a new ferry dock in Wexford, Ireland. He found a seemingly suitable location, then designed a quite handsome stone pier, complete with landscaping around the approach and the car park. The highlight of this greenery was a series of expertly shaped shrubs. While the project was progressing well, it turned out that the seabed was proving very difficult to dredge, so to compensate, it was decided to extend the pier further out into the harbor. As a result, some of the ferry captains dubbed the pier, "Ian's Long Quay to the Topiary".
