The Wharf Rat (12/25/95)
Eclectic mix of Muy Thai and grappling styles. The students seem to be mostly younger people; all are competent fighters.
Shawn M. Peyton (8/10/96)
I have a few remarks for you about Academy of Combat Arts. I have known the owner, Mr Esquivel, for a year or so and his dedication to serving the martial artists of Austin is without equal. He supports a number of classes and will rent space and time to any style or practice. The classes running right now are Bujinkan Ninjutsu, a kickboxing class using jeet kun do concepts, and intergrated arts class combining a number of stlyes from jujitsu to tae kwon do.
All are taught by qualified instructors with well over 10 years of experience. The bujinkan instuctor is one of the finest I have trained under for the ideals of reality combat. Along with classes, Mr. Esquival offers a full shop of training gear and exotic weapons. For non-traditional training and supplies this is the place to check out.

Anyone seeking to learn Tae Kwon Do, I would strongly recommend the American Black Belt Academy.
I also trained in Tae Kwon Do for thirteen years, and for a few of those it was under a Mr.Gotcher and Mr. Hammond of Texas Tae Kwon Do. I have never met a more passionate instructor than Mr Gotcher or Mr. Hammond. They helped me through some rough times in my training, so you could definatly see that their students mean more to them than a paycheck. Unfortunatly I lost touch with Mr. Gotcher, but Mr Hammond is the head instrustor of the American Black Belt Academy.

ATA Tae kwan Do, Okinawan Goju Ryu, judo, and jujitsu. Judo classes are M-W 8-10PM and Saturday 9:30-1100 AM. The judo program is the best one in Williamson or Travis counties. The instructor is Zdenk Matl, a 6th dan and former Olympic coach.
Brian Rogers (9/2/96)
I have never visited the Karate Chop, but as an ATA Taekwondo school owner, I am certain the Karate Chop soes not offer ATA Taekwondo. Only two schools in Austin are ATA schools - Niblock's Taekwondo USA in Austin and in Round Rock.

I go to Kuk Sool Won on the north side of Austin. Kuk Sool is a great martial art. It combines the elements of various Korean and Chinese arts. It included both punch/kick and grpppling techniques. You can get more info on Kuk Sool at http://www.sys.uea.ac.uk/%7Eah/kuksool/
The Northside school is very good as well and I've enjoyed the time I've spent there.

Mostly Tae Kwon Do, with some Hap Ki Do. Weapons may be taught for more advanced students. Taught by Master P.S. Cha and Joseph Cha (brothers), both advanced degree black belts and native Koreans. Fairly traditional and demanding, you WILL get a good workout here. Those interested in free sparring techniques should be happy with this school, especially the Friday night workouts (which typically concentrate on free sparring, either noncontact without gear, light contact with gear and no gloves, or moderate contact including the gloves).

The best combination of striking/grappling I've seen in Austin. Realistic training for street fight situations.

I have trained in Tukong Moosul (Special Combat Warrior Technique's) for the past eight years. I have also trained in Tae Kwon Do and IshinRyu Karate. I am very pleased with the traditional training provided in Tukong and recommend it highly to anyone looking for a reality based martial art. Training is complete with weapons and Tai Chi (soft style) training.
Anonymous (5/23/97)
I've been training at the North 2 facility for a couple of months now. I am very impressed with this style and of the teachers. They are very patient and very persistent. Be ready to sweat though, they're not soft.
