A new theatre, that plans to open around Christmas of this year.

Bass Concert Hall

Reader Remarks

Ron Boerger (2/20/96)
Austin's premium space for classical music; home of the Austin Symphony Orchestra and Austin Lyric Opera. Seats about 3000 with good acoustics and other amenities. Very hard for other local organizations to book due to the number of UT and touring shows that rent the hall. Parking is usually a bit of a problem, but the nearby LBJ library can usually accomodate the overflow.

Bates Recital Hall

Reader Remarks

Ron Boerger (2/20/96)
A nice "intimate" hall on the UT campus, seating around 500. Famous for the wonderful organ located therein, and good acoustics, with a adjustable ceiling that can be raised/lowered to redirect sound into the hall. Like most of UT's facilities, hard to book unless you have a connection to the University. UT's Music School uses the hall for many of its ensemble concerts, and rightfully so.

Well, it's big. You can reserve it, if you're willing to get in on a weeknight and can put in your reservation almost a year before you need it. As big halls go, it's relatively cheap. You can seat over 3000.
Having said all the good things about Palmer, here are the not-so-good:
- local orgs have a very hard time getting a Friday, Saturday, or Sunday reservation; out-of-town orgs get priority, and can make reservations more than a year in advance.
- It's a barn. Acoustically the hall is not too sound; what would you expect from an old round building.
- The facility is showing its age.

Zilker Hillside Theatre

Reader Remarks

Ron Boerger (2/20/96)
A wonderful outdoor venue, open to the stars at night, and made even better by recent stage renovations which provide a larger, more stable performance area, improved lighting, and actual dressing rooms. Zilker is set at the bottom of some small hills and bluffs, which provide a natural ampitheater that can be used nearly year-round. The audience sits on blankets or folding chairs on a first-come, first served, basis. The annual Summer Musical is the best-known event held here, but many groups, including the Austin Symphony, Austin Symphonic Band, and others, give performances here for the Austin public.
Parking can be a problem, especially for the summer musical. Plan ahead and arrive early to secure good seating.

General Comments

Garrett T. Maddox (4/5/97)
The oldest theatre in Austin is re-opening its doors to the public. The Scottish Rite Company is joining forces with The Violet Crown Players to put on Guys and Dolls. It is running the weekends of April 11th - May 4th. For info about the tickets and showtimes call the Scottish Rite at 472-7247 or The Violet Crown Players at 342-2837.
