Quite an extensive imported beer selection. Roomy, indoor/outdoor seating, dart boards. Northwest Austin location for those who live/work this way.
Brian Combs (2/4/97)
The beer selection is impressive, but the strip-center location doesn't provide the pub atmosphere I crave.

Boar's Head

$2.00 pints every day!

Cedar Street Bar

Just opened in March. Live jazz bands in sunken courtyard. Drinks are served in tall glasses & are a bit on the pricey side (3.25 - 3.75) but great atmosphere. Guiness, Anchor Steam, Bass, Sam Adams, etc on tap.
Brian Combs (2/4/97)
Not really a pub, but it does have a decent beer selection. More of a martini/jazz bar.

Crown and Anchor Pub

This place is just like the Dog & Duck only it's where a lot of grunge-head/Grad student types go instead of the Senate Chamber, UT staff, downtown business heads that go to the Dog and Duck. Pool table and darts. Quick-to-cook grub served.
Brian Combs (2/4/97)
Also one of the most pet friendly places in town. I love to take the dog there.

Draught Horse

Austin, Texas

42 imports on tap, the neighborhood pub you've always wanted. It's small and cozy in a English Tudor building just brimming with atmosphere. Brewing should start any day now, and they'll have food as soon as the Pizza oven is installed. Always a wide selection of Texas Microbrewery beers.
Dewey Coffman (6/14/95)
They now have pizza and nachos. Their own-brewed beer has been exceptional, with the Schimitar IPA as the most hoppy beer (certainly the most hoppy IPA) I've had in many years. The Schimitar IPA was Hans (of SouthWest Brewing News) winning entry into the Austin Homebrew contest.
Monday nights are Irish Music night, and Thursday nights are "give-away" nights with key-rings, t-shirts and other stuff from brewers trying to promote their beers.
Brian Combs (2/4/97)
The kitchen now offers a complete line of "pub grub" including buffalo wings, quesadillas and the like. On New Year's Eve, they even offered haggis.
To my knowledge, they are the only bar in town that offers mead.

Dog & Duck Pub
406 West 17th Street
Austin, Texas 78701
Tel: (512) 479-0598

Reader Remarks

Felipe Campos (3/5/95)
Nice English style pub with friendly bartenders. Lots of fine beers on tap and in bottle from the world over. Lots of Ties and coats hang out there from the Senate chambers and downtown offices. Has pinball machines and tradition pub dart boards.
Pub grub is served.
Brian Combs (2/4/97)
A very friendly feeling place, but the beer selection is somewhat limited in comparison to places like the Draught Horse.

Elephant Room

Dark & underground w/ great jazz/blues music. Tends to be a bit loud.

Gingerman, The
304 West Fourth Street
Austin, Texas

This is my favorite place to get a beer since I love German Whites and they have quite a selection of them. Quite a selection of everything for that matter. I may be exaggerrating but any place that has Dos Equis Lager on tap is my friend since I've never found it anywhere but here on tap, as well as EKU which I've only found in the bottle at liquor stores. The selection is great and the barkeeps are eager to find a beer suitable to your tastes and will let you sample. It's a cozy place, but it gets crowded on the weekends. Outside tables and warm weather should filter this out a bit. Weekdays are cozy and the place hosts cigar nights where you get a few beers and cigars for $20. One pool table. No food. Wine, champagne, cappuccino, and beer.
Brian Combs (2/4/97)
Definitely one of the better beer selections in town. They generally have one or two things that are extremely difficult to find anywhere else.
Can be a bit crowded on weekend nights.

Lavaca Street Bar
405 Lavaca Street
Austin, Texas 78701
Tel: (512) 469-0106

Reader Remarks

Keith Petrus (3/25/95)
Limited beers on tap, Sam Adams, Shiner, etc. but decent bottle selection. Doubles as gallery space for local artists & photographers. Shuffleboard & Pool table. Patronized by an odd mix of professional types.

Maggie Mae's
512 Trinity Street
Austin, Texas
Tel: (512) 478-8541

Readers Remarks

Brian Combe (2/4/97)
This may be the oldest place in town that caters to the fine beer drinker. Unfortunately, they also cater to the Sixth Street crowd.

Scholz Garten

Only a moderate beer selection, but they have a great biergarten.

Shaggy's
1600 S. Congress
Austin, Texas

Reader Remarks

LPRAG@aol.com (2/22/97)
Shaggys at 1600 S Congress has 22 brews on tap and at least 50 other bottles in the cooler. The food is very good and inexpensive. They speicalize in Carribean i.e. jerk chicken, pepper pot soup and ital rundown. They also serve special rum drinks.

Shakespeare's Pub

Austin, Texas 78701
Tel: (512) 472-1666

Readers Responses

Brian Combs (2/4/97)
Another Sixth Street bar that specializes in fine beers. Often very crowded on weekends, but not a bad place early in the week.
