Utopia

by Diana Louise

As I sit sunbathing in my garden this morning, waiting for inspiration, and sipping my gourmet coffee, a bee has just landed on the rim of my cup. Humourously, it is captioned, "I'm only doing this job to keep myself busy between films." It could be the sugar he needs, but it's probably the chocolate raspberry flavor that he really craves.

Spring is here in Austin. This winged visiter seems to symbolize the Utopia buzzing amidst Austin's atmosphere this week. It could be just the pollen in the air that is causing our city to sneeze, but those of us who stop, however briefly, to smell the roses during this busy time KNOW. Something very powerful is going on. South by Southwest is here once again in all of its splendor. Pessimists and optimists alike may chalk this sensational feeling up to the full moon. Which, incidentally , if you had the fortunate opportunity to be in Austin this week, you would agree, has been shining most brilliantly over this awakening "small town". The city streets and electronic highways have come alive, connecting us with the rest of the world. As a hometown girl and a newcomer to the world of electronic media, I stand in awe of the spirit we are experiencing.

The hotels are overflowing, so some say that this city does not know how to plan. I say that it does. My hat is off to whomever it was that orchestrated this virtual symphony of events. The SXSW Music, Media, and Film Conference, Spring Break, the Rodeo, the NCAA Championships, Rain Showers, Thunderstorms, Fluffy Clouds, Hot Sun, Cool Breezes, St. Patrick's Day, the Full Moon, and Bluebonnets all in the same week! Austin is bursting with positive energy, good karma, and great people. Our aim is to share this with the rest of the world via any media/medium we can find.

All week long, as I have traveled to the places where I do work, I have heard the spirit of Stevie Ray playing over the radio waves. He must be here to remind us that Austin is moving in great directions. His presence is particularly eminent now as our city is filled with phenominal individuals seeking and reaching their fullest potentials. As our seams stretch, we are heading onward, outward, and upward through the fog. (I previously forgot to mention the Fog.) We are rejuvenating. Welcome to Austin, Home of SXSW. Bon Appetite and Bon Voyage!
