Good night, sweet Apple II

As a service to our readers, Austin Axis Monthly is offering the text of recent Mac Talk programs originally broadcast on radio station KGSR.

Glenn Pieper: Hi, I'm Glenn Pieper

Craig Negoescu: and I'm Craig Negoescu

Both: And this is Mac Talk

GP: This week a resounding hello, a pat on the back and a hearty farewell. I'm referring to the debut of the new Mac: LC 5200, the sucess of the Mac's Operating System: 7.5 and the discontinuation of the Apple II.

CN: This May, Apple will open a new chapter in its all-in-one desktop book when it delivers the LC 5200. The LC 5200 will combine a 15 inch color monitor and a 75Mhz Power PC 603 chip in a single unit. Also included are built-in CD-Rom, floppy drive and an infrared receiver for remote control.

GP: In other Mac news, Apple recently touted the huge success of its latest operating system - 7.5. Chock full of gret new features, like: Window Shades,Drag & Drop, and hierarchal menus, 7.5 has been a hit with users and developers alike. Apple officials revealed in early March that the company has sold more than 1 million upgrades of the latest system release. More than half of those were shipped through the volume licencing program that also covers more than a million users.

CN :Finally, nearly 20 years after the machines inception, the last remnants of the Apple II disappeared from Apple's product line, including the discontinuation of all remaining Apple II accessories. Still lingering, however, are the Apple IIe Expansion card for the LC line and an Apple 5.25 inch floppy drives.

GP: Gee Craig, I'm kind of sorry to see the Apple II go away. Hugely successful in the education market, it was the first Apple I ever worked on. Oh well, time marches on and...well...doesn't every kid deserve a Power PC on their desk at school?

CN: Well, that may be possible if the rumours hold true for the new clones. Subject for a futer MacTalk, Austin's own PowerComputing is slated to begin shipping Mac compatible PowerPC clones in early to mid May. Reported street price is expected to under $1000 for a base level Power PC.

GP: As always the street price for MacTalk is absolutly free. You can also e-mail us at MacTalk@ONR.COM.
